A leak at a place you visit twice a season can run until your next trip. Safehous watches the water at your cottage or cabin while it sits empty, closes the supply automatically, and lets you check on it from home.
The problem with an empty property
Nobody is there to hear a drip or notice a damp ceiling. A failed fitting that would be caught in an hour at home can run for weeks at a vacation property, and by then the damage is structural.
Seasonal properties also sit through long stretches without anyone checking the plumbing at all — and one cold snap with the heat down is enough to split a pipe.
How Safehous protects a holiday home
An in-line flow sensor and automatic valve on the supply close the water the moment the system sees a leak. Point-of-leak sensors sit under the water heater, sinks and wherever else water could appear.
With the gateway online — through the property’s internet, or the optional gateway hub’s own 4G cellular connection — you are alerted by text, email or voice call wherever you are, and the Safehous app lets you check the valve and close it before you leave or open it before you arrive. It also warns you before a freeze: the FL-1000 flow sensor raises a freeze alarm when the water in the line gets too cold, and the floor sensors carry their own temperature sensor.

Pools, irrigation and water treatment systems use water on their own schedule — and to a flow sensor, water moving when nobody is home can look like a leak. We lay out the installation so it doesn’t.
The Safehous valve goes on the main supply, straight after your manual shut-off and ahead of everything else. Water treatment — filters and softeners — comes after the valve, and the in-line flow sensor goes after the treatment equipment, on the supply to the house. The flow sensor watches only the water your home uses, so a softener regenerating or a filter backwashing isn’t mistaken for a leak. A rope or puck floor sensor beside the treatment equipment covers it if it ever fails. On irrigation and pool filler lines, the flow sensor is installed after the line’s tee for the same reason.
Any alarm, from the flow sensor or a floor sensor, closes the valve — shutting off the water to the treatment system and the whole house.
Common questions
- Can I shut the water off when we leave?
- Yes. Close the valve from the Safehous app when you lock up, and open it again from the app before you arrive.
- Does the cottage need internet for this to work?
- Alerts, control while you are away and the cloud features all need a connection. The standard gateway uses the cottage’s internet, by Ethernet or Wi-Fi. The optional gateway hub adds its own 4G cellular connection, for properties without reliable internet, and a four-hour battery backup. The sensors and valve run on their own LoRa wireless network to the gateway. The FL-1000 flow sensor needs permanent power, and the valve controller has an AA battery backup so the automatic valve keeps working in a power cut.
- Will it warn me if the cottage is about to freeze?
- Yes. The FL-1000 flow sensor sends a freeze alarm when the water temperature in the supply line drops too low, and the floor sensors also alert on temperature — so you can act before a pipe bursts.
